Weed and Grass Control

The Village will be made aware of vegetation, weed, and grass issues through citizen complaints and/or routine inspections by the inspection staff. The Village of Milan maintains a Weed and Vegetation abatement program that is intended to remedy these complaints and improve our neighborhoods.

Once each year, in April, a weed/grass/ and vegetation public notice is published in the newspaper advising residents of this regulation.

Vegetation, weeds, and grass over 10 inches in height on private property within the village is a violation of the Village Code of Ordinances. A courtesy notice is sent to the property owner allowing ten days to arrange for the abatement and clean up of the violation. This notice will also constitute reasonable notice for the remainder of the growing season.

If the violation is not abated and cleaned up, the Village will abate the weed, grass and vegetation problem. The property owner will be responsible and billed for the service plus an administrative fee for each violation occurrence and parcel.

If a property is in violation for any subsequent occurrence, no courtesy notice will be sent to the property owner. The Village will abate the violation and send the bill to the property owner for service and administrative costs. Habitual offenders may face additional fines and penalties.

Note that the property owner is responsible for the maintenance of the boulevard or Public Right of Way adjoining the private property. Shrubbery or other vegetation can not obstruct movement or vision on public streets or sidewalks.
